mash the pedals - cycle holidays and training in North Wales

etape du tour 2012 preparation weekends

£280 per person for 1-4 people
£250 per person for 5-8 people
£230 per person for 9+ people
(we believe in economies of scale and value for money!)

We have been getting very excited here at mashthepedals these last few weeks!  We have been busy studying the route and profiles for this years Etape and have come up with our very own version of these classic and tough routes.

After countless rides, GPS mapping and a few punctures to boot, we have created 2 perfect routes to replicate the same distance and total height gain for each of the Acts.  You won't just be grinding up the same hill in order to hit the 5000m  mark.  You will never ride the same hill twice and like the Alps and Pyrennese, each one has its own distinct character and stunning scenery.

An Etape Du Tour training weekend would include the following:
  • Arrival on Friday, with collection/ pick up from local train station (Llandudno or Llandudno Junction)
  • Homemade cake and a large mug of tea/ coffee to welcome you!
  • Assistance with bike set-up (indexing gears, brake check, seat adjustment etc)
  • Advice on the coming days riding and where's good to eat/ drink in town
  • A presentation on Nutriton for cycling performance from our qualified sports nutritionist
  • Friday night accommodation
  • Saturday - Breakfast, safety briefing, last minute bike check
  • The ride - Acte I or Acte II
  • *** Free rider pack - to include a gel, fruit, flapjack and energy drink ***
  • Return back to accommodation. Talk, recount ride experiences, relax, eat cake, drink tea/ coffee - whatever you want to do.
  • *** Free bike wash and basic service (lube chain, check brakes, tyre pressures, etc) ***
  • A free 30 minute sports massage from our qualified therapist to bring those legs back to life!
  • Home meals can be ordered in advance or out into town for a post ride feed and rehydration
  • Saturday night accommodation
  • Sunday - Breakfast, safety briefing, last minute bike check
  • The post-Etape ride - as discussed and agreed in advance (to suit your level/ needs)
  • *** Free rider pack - to include a gel, fruit, flapjeck and energy drink ***
  • Return to accommodation, homemade cake, tea/ coffee.  Reflect on the weekend, issue your Etape certificate of worthiness. Shake hands, pat on back, etc!
  • Say our farewells (and return you to train station if necessary)

Riding in the UK has never been so good

Acte I Albertville to La Toussiure Les Sybelles

Picture
In our opinion, this is the easier of the stages on offer this year but that does not mean it is going to be easy.  Covering a distance of 140km (87.5 miles) and a overall height gain of 4,650m, it comes in lower than Act 2 in terms of the numbers. It is not though that makes it the easier climb.  Act 2 includes the Col du Soulour followed by the Col du Tourmalet and from our own experiences, this is a tough combination.

The route we have come up with here in North Wales for Acte I, takes in some beautiful, long, steady alpine-style climbs.  Graceful ascents up through valleys, following the sides of mountains, climbing through wooded glades and out onto high passes; the descents that follow snake down long ribbons of tarmac, crossing small streams, racing through small villages of ancient stone.

Acte II Pau to Bagnères de Luchon

Picture
Acte II is simply going to be epic.  Taking in 5 legendary Pyreneen climbs over a distance of  197km will test anyone's skill, stamina and mental strength.  From Pau to Bagnères de Luchon and with over 1500m of climbing inbetween, I think we'll all be very grateful for the final roll into the finish.

Our training route in and around Snowdonia takes in some of the most challenging awe-inspiring terrain we have on offer.  Climbs such as Bwlch-y-Groes, Pen-y-Pass, Gwynant, Mynydd Coed-y-Drws, Dol-y-Moch and a lot more will combine with eye-popping mileage to create an epic riding experience.
